Sometimes you have a problem with System Preferences or something related to it, like it remembering your screensaver or desktop selection, or perhaps it won't launch or launches funky.

This procedure is for deleting the 'preferences' file(s) that is located in your (hidden) User/Library folder that can resolve issues like this.

When the computer is rebooted and the associated program launched again, it recreates this file, but blank of preferences, thus since it's rebuilt it's free of problems.

This procedure also works for other programs like iPhoto or iTunes, or whatever that stores a preference file (.plist) in the (hidden) User/Library folder, the procedure is the same, just sub out the program your having problems with .plist file instead of the System Preference .plist file below.

Known preference files issues:

com.apple.systempreferences.plist (corrupted/not launching System Preferences)

com.apple.desktop.plist (corrupted/not working desktop picture changes)

com.apple.safari.plist (safari issues)

So we are going to delete a preference file in a hidden folder, this will only affect the preference file, not your personal files or programs.

1: Go to the Finder and select Go menu and Go To Folder

2: Now paste or type

~/Library/Preferences

3: Press GO! and a folder will appear

4: Scroll down and find

com.apple.systempreferences.plist com.apple.desktop.plist (or whatever program your having problems with)

5: There may be two of the same named file, drag the one you can to the Trash can

6: Restart the computer and open System Preferences (or problem program) and reset all your preferences again

System Requirements for Installing the JDK on macOS

The following are the system requirements for installing the JDK on macOS:

• Any Intel-based computer running macOS.

• Administrator privileges.

Installing the JDK on macOS

1. Download the JDK .dmg file, jdk-12.interim.update.patch-macosx-x64.dmg.

   Before the file can be downloaded, you must accept the license agreement.

2. From either the browser Downloads window or from the file browser, double-click the .dmg file to start it.
   A Finder window appears that contains an icon of an open box and the name of the .pkg file.
3. Double-click the JDK 12.pkg icon to start the installation application.
   The installation application displays the Introduction window.
4. Click Continue.
5. Click Install.
   A window appears that displays the message: Installer is trying to install new software. Enter your password to allow this.
6. Enter the Administrator user name and password and click Install Software.
   The software is installed and a confirmation window is displayed.

Uninstalling the JDK on macOS

Note:

Do not attempt to uninstall Java by removing the Java tools from /usr/bin. This directory is part of the system software and any changes will be reset by Apple the next time that you perform an update of the OS.

1. Go to /Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines.
2. Remove the directory whose name matches the following format by executing the rm command as a root user or by using the sudo tool:
   /Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines/jdk-interim.update.patch.jdk

   For example, to uninstall 12 Interim 0 Update 0 Patch 0:

   $ rm -rf jdk-12.jdk
